Our Environment

Food

Other than original packaging, food does not contact plastic or teflon during preparation or serving. All food contact surfaces are silicon, glass, stainless steel, or wood. Because of food safety and health risks associated with processed foods and pesticides, we serve almost exclusively organic foods always prepared fresh. No canned or frozen foods are ever used.

Water

Handwashing water is softened with a non-chemical water softener, and water for cooking or drinking is reverse osmosis filtered. Water is served in glass or stainless steel.

Sanitation

All cleaning is done with mild soaps and disinfected with E.P.A. approved botanical disinfectant. No bleach or other harsh chemicals are used in the environment. Clothes and dishes are sanitized with sanitize settings on washing machines. Over sanitization is also linked to many health risks, and so access to home grown vegetables and gardening with careful handwashing and food prep allow a safe contact point for beneficial bacteria.

Waste

All waste made by the kids will be composted. A 4.5 kw solar system provides the power for the electric oven and other appliances. Creative reuse is taught through art projects and low impact alternatives are always discussed.
